One Dark Throne
by Kendare Blake
I enjoyed this more than the first one, but I still do find that there are too many characters, because there’s the three queens and then each of their entourages which makes a lot of characters to follow.
Spoilers Ahead
My main question is what is Madrigal doing, and will it have any significant impact on the plot because she’s getting a lot of page time. I do find the whole pregnancy plot a little weird because she is sleeping with her Sister’s Husband, who is also her Daughter’s boyfriend’s brother, so it is all very close and I still don’t know why it’s relevant to the plot because none of the other characters seem to mind.
I think this change of personality for Katharine is really interesting to see because she’s felt a little one dimensional in the first book. She is definitely back with a vengeance, I do want to know what happened after she was pushed because it feels like it should have done a lot. I also want to know, what is her gift because she isn’t a poisoner right? Maybe an oracle queen because they keep saying that there hasn’t been one since the last one went mad.
I was expecting it to be a little more ambiguous as to whether Mirabella and Arsinoe lived or died, but I am very glad that Billy and Arsinoe are reunited because they are really sweet together. I don’t quite get how Arsinoe’s low magic worked so much better on Braddock this time because it’s only a few weeks after (at the beginning of the book) the disaster.
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with Jules, especially after Joseph’s pretty anti climactic end, and what she is going to do with her war gift and the legion curse because that is going to be an interesting dynamic.
