Obit by Victoria Chang

”Death is our common ancestor. It doesn’t care whom we have dined with.”

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t completely sold on these poems when I started reading them. But I think that’s because I was reading them slowly. Usually, I would argue that poetry collections shouldn’t be rushed, but instead dragged out when reading them. Obit is a clear outlier. I read the second half of these poems in a sitting and felt like I was on another planet. I could almost feel the grief Victoria Chang was writing about. There were some really beautiful lines and poems in this collection. I definitely recommend it, as long as you’re in the right headspace. These do get super sad.
