A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

4.0

Very descriptive. Quite slow for most of the book. The action doesn't start until the second half and then it's not all that thrilling and is short-lived. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3 because after picking it up for the 3rd time and finally reading it all the way through, I want to know what happens next. I'm counting on book 2 to have more action, fewer library scenes, and less drinking wine.

Diana is okay as an MC, but I think she has too many moments of immaturity that don’t fit how she’s portrayed in the beginning. Matthew too, he's super old but acts like a teenage boy. Other than that, the story is intriguing, and I am looking forward to learning where it goes and how their relationship progresses.

I love the take on supernatural beings. Harkeness' take on demons is interesting, and I hope the next books include more of them.
SpoilerI don't mind slow burn, but I'm not too into Matthew's excuse for not sleeping with Diana. She makes it clear she wants to sleep with him, and he keeps telling her they have time. Being that he is immortal, he may have all the time in the world, but from what I understand, she doesn't. So, to me it's selfish in a way... or maybe I just wanted more spice?
