Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud
5.0
Pretty much essential for anyone with even a remote interest in comics. It deconstructs the language of comics going into detail about everything from speech bubbles to panels and guttering whilst simultaneously providing examples by being in the medium itself. I'd love to read a follow up that charts the evolution of comics from when it was written to present day, but as far as getting the origins and basics down, as well as helping you understand how a comic does what it does, you really couldn't ask for more.
