Tangerine by Christine Mangan
4.0

“She had taken everything from me–but I had let her.” Alice.

Near the finish of this book and story, I started to envision the “movie”. Scarlett Johansson as Lucy with the remnants of the knife shredded sofa stuck to her face. Or will she be Alice who never wanted to go outside? I’m not sure of who I dislike the most. These women needed to read some “self-help” books that probably did not exist in 1950’s Tangiers.

Seriously I love mysteries, murder, crime and mayhem and admit to spending much time searching for and reading voraciously. A “good” book/story in this genre is like a specialty candy bar flavor, so satisfying. I read everything but seem to be pulled to these dysfunctional people and their stories.

I noticed that Mangan’s writing had been compared to Gillian Flynn so I immediately put Tangerine on hold at the library. Early on I became confused as to “who” was Alice and “who” was Lucy? I suppose this was purposely written. I would not compare this to Gillian Flynn though, more like a good Hitchcock movie in the 1950’s. Flynn is more like Polanski.

In all the murder and crime mysteries I have read, I usually have been able to find something I like about the subjects even if it was small. Something that left a small bit of understanding. Lucy and Alice reminded me of two small dogs that are not able to leave the weakest of the pack alone and constantly pick on the weaker or submissive. The weak one does nothing to stand her ground. I wanted to take Alice and shake her.

So perhaps I “enjoyed” the story more than I want to admit in writing, but I am still shaking my head at Lucy and Alice. Scarlett should be Lucy, probably. And when is Gillian Flynn writing a new story?
