More All-Of-A-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor

Wow, this book really got under my skin as a kid in ways I had forgotten. This series was both exotic and super cozy for me in the way Little House must have been for suburban kids. I am finding myself recognizing the smallest details -- the messy uncle's makeover (I had a messy bachelor uncle!), the lemon and chocolate snaps in the cracker barrel (my folks shopped at a small country store with barrels of things!). Plus, a bunch of things I would not encounter in real life till Much Later, like latkes and the Lower East Side and honey cake.

PS -- the whole chapter where a nice young man leaves a note for Ella in a MIS-SHELVED LIBRARY BOOK and the librarian watches the whole thing go down with delight turned out to be the model for my career, too.
