My Crunchy Life by Mia Kerick

3.0

I loved the contrast between Kale and Julian, not only in their personalities but also with their families. The familiar bond is the strongest part of this story. I really adored Julian’s mother. Julian’s mother supported Julian every step of the way. Though they are characters, I do strongly believe in a strong support system. Each character was unique in their own way and developed enough to what to continue reading.

Throughout the book, both Kale and Julian face obstacles and challenges that prevent them from living as their “true selves”. Once being in the same position as Kale, and at times, Julian, I could relate to their high school woes. Kerick’s depiction of high school is one of my favorites because it is actually true, or at least very similar to my own experience.

This book is perfect for anyone just trying to figure life out. It deals with many issues that children and teenagers face today in school. Bullying plays a large role in this book. This book empowers not only the LGBTQ community but others are facing societies stereotypes and prejudices.
