Julia by Sandra Newman
4.0

When I first read 1984 I was 16 and thought it was the most insightful book I'd ever read. I re-read it at 25 and thought it was still pretty incredible, but found it lacking. In the original, Julia is wildly overlooked, as are all women in the story. Though written well, from a 21st century view Winston doesn't half look like some scarface loving chain smoking doc wearing 2nd year philosophy boy, who will absolutely mansplain solipsism to you. In this re telling, Julia is every women ever to have rolled her eyes at him. She has far greater depth, knowledge and intuition than he could ever have, in every way possible- but knowes there's no use in explaining that to him.
I thought this was an excellent modern day companion to bring the original up to speed. Also the additional world building adds the cherry on top.
8/10 would 100% recommend you read this!
