For “a novel of the plague” there is significantly little about the plague here. This is a novel about secrets. The secrets we keep from strangers, and the secrets we continue to keep when those strangers have become our partners in survival. Overall, I was highly disturbed and uncomfortable, but I couldn’t quit reading (or listening, in this case. The narrator was terrific!)
There were some bothersome modern ideas and practices projected into this 14th century world. I’m almost certain germ theory and due process did not exist as they were presented here. But I could overlook it for the sake of the story.
