The Secret History by Donna Tartt

5.0

The Secret History has become one of my favourite reads of 2013. I found it very similar to the film Dead Poets Society, which is also one of my favourites. This landmark literary mystery, although long, is engrossing as it follows the lives of 6 college students studying Greek in a remote area of Vermont.

Tartt's writing is crisp, and often stunning; it has the power to make the reader laugh, cry or quake with sudden insights. The characters are colourful, intricate individuals. By the end of the book the reader experiences a genuine affection for them, coupled with sober pity for their tragic fates.

I did feel that the tension dipped somewhat towards the end, in the climax that should have been more exciting, but overall an excellent read.
