This story has wonderful dark fairytale vibes that are deeply hair raising at times, and borrows elements from The Goose Girl in different ways. It is also refreshing to read a story where the women are the most compelling characters (Penelope, for instance), and with a woman in her fifties, Hester, as the co-protagonist in the story. It is also a story about a controlling, abusive parent, but with magic involved.
