The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson

4.0

This book is for practical purposes completely unrelated to the first Elantris novel despite supposedly taking place in the same world (...not really, though - most of the novella takes place in one small room...); you needn't having read Elantris before reading this one.

As it can be read independently of other books written by Sanderson, and as most of Sanderson's other books are quite a lot longer than this one, it might actually for some readers be a good starting point for trying out Sanderson - it's a well written and enjoyable work and features some of the characteristics also present in his longer works (e.g., strong characters/admirable character portrayals, 'magic with imposed constraints', and a dark/oppressive universe in which characters need to navigate and survive).
