Little Heaven by Nick Cutter
3.0
I didn’t care for the antagonist. I was excited to have a spiritual demon completely melt and devour the minds of children in a horrific spin on the typical religious cult trope. But instead what I got was an evil more physical and much more of a bogeyman in the woods type of trope. Easily defeat-able and therefore not as scary (in my opinion!) I also got a lot of “tell not show.” A lot description was redundant and about how the characters FELT creeped out and as if they were spiraling and I found myself thinking… “Okay awesome but I would like to SEE that.”
The gore was top tier and the protagonists I ADORED. And then ending did have me tearing up for the fates of our heroes, the little rag tag group of mercenaries. Pleasantly surprised to have a semi happy ending but the 400-500 pages it took to get there wasn’t entirely worth it to me. I had a slow burn read indeed but I wanted a heart-racing and page turning, keep me up at night read.
Still, all in all, it was a decent read!
