If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane
4.0

I think Mhairi McFarlane has officially secured a spot on my list of favorite authors. Her writing takes a bit to get into, I think, but once you do it's so effortless. She has a certain style that's a combination of humor, romance, and wit.

I think for the most part this story was really well done! I felt very bad for Laurie throughout the entire book, but it was rewarding to see her finally come to terms with herself outside of the Laurie she was in "Dan and Laurie."

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for a few reasons. I think Jamie and Laurie's relationship needed more development before they jumped into actually really liking each other. It just seemed very rushed and 0 to 100 real quick. Also, I'm a bit apprehensive about a white woman writing a WOC character, and some of the moments I found.. a bit cringey because of that. I think that just comes from a lack of believable authority of MacFarlane writing about the experience of being Black, of, half-Black.

Nonetheless, a funny read I was engrossed in. A few gut-wrenching lines that I'll think about for quite some time.
