Claudia and the New Girl by Ann M. Martin

4.0

I did enjoy this book, though not as much as the other Baby-sitters Club Graphix novels. I got a copy of the book the day it came out because I was a fan of the original series in my youth, and am enjoying these adaptions.

There's a great lesson about committing to your craft (in this case art, but it could apply to any pursuit - writing, music, etc). But there's also a message about not limiting yourself, to keep exploring other areas, and to not neglect relationships which can result in being all alone. These are good conversation starters for teens as well as adults.

The BSC girls turn into mean girls when they feel that Claudia ditched them. It's a dark side and the revenge doesn't really get addressed. But it does hold a mirror up to society because sometimes people do make new friends who have a shared interest and end up spending more time with them.

This is a book with diverse characters. It is entertaining and has a happily-ever-after.

I preferred the art styles of Gale Galligan and Raina Telgemeier, especially when it comes to side views of faces. With Gabriela Epstein, the girls sometimes looked more like anime wolves or some other were-creature. This book includes a mobile phone, which is a change for this "universe." The new girl character, Ashley Wyeth, has been altered from a hippie to someone who looks more like a modern teen artist from a big city. (This makes the "nice skirt" insulting comment seem bizarre.)
