Gallant by V.E. Schwab

5.0

This was a 4.5 star read for me.

Gallant is such a vibe. It is a very spooky Secret Garden... the type of book that you read in a whisper (even though you are not reading out loud).

There is so much to love about this book. I loved the set up of this story - that the MC was mute and we heard the story through her. I loved the imagery that was stirred up. And I loved how the journal and illustrations added to the whole story.

Given how short this book is, there are some thing that were missing for me. The secondary characters were not as built up as I would have liked. I would have spent less time at the orphanage and more time on those who were at Gallant.

I have also seen that other reviews state that the ending was abrupt. While I agree with that - I think it is partially due to the fact that the book is short but the other part is that I was so engrossed in what was happening that it all felt over kind of quick.

I ended up taking off a half a star just because I wish the book was a bit longer - I think it would have addressed all of the wants I still have. The pieces are all still there, I just want more.
