If you enjoyed Satyajit Ray's magnificent Apu trilogy then you are highly likely to fall in love with this (which from memory forms the core of the first 1 1/2 films). It is a similarly completely immersive and spellbinding experience, although the poverty and in particular the plight of women, are even more front and centre in the novel. Not that it is depressing - although it shies away not one bit from the negatives it still manages to conjure a wondrous, joyful, and vibrant world.
