Sense and Sensibility: Diaries and Screenplay by Emma Thompson, Jane Austen

3.0

A fun and diverting insight into the making of Sense & Sensibility - Emma Thompson screenplay is genius and her diaries at the end of the book from film shoot are hilarious, insightful and show just how draining and complicated it is making a film. I have no idea how one ever manages it. Her diaries swing from lunch details, alcohol consumed and the cast and crews various injuries, illnesses and general sleep deprivation to some charming insights into the cast (Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman of course all pop up) and little nuggets of conversation. With regards to her acting Thompson is brief and self-deprecating, praising her co-actors and lamenting how awful (and tired) she is. Which seems very sweet considering how great she is in the film.

My favourite exchange was definitely:

Kate: 'Oh God, my knickers have gone up my arse.'
Alan: 'Ah. Feminine mystique strikes again.'
