We owe Rebecca Mix an apology.

So much of what is said about this book is blatant lies.

This is not a book about "reverse racism" or about "oppressors becoming the oppressed." I agree Mix could have incorporated more nuance into her history, but this was not a story ABOUT oppression, and about one side being right. this was a story about abusive and oppressive authority figures, and in that it succeeded very, VERY well.

Also, everyone saying the blood magic was antisemitic is straight up wrong, it's only possible for that to be antisemitic in the context of Jewish people being a part of the narrative and not only were they NOT, but also that would requite invoking blood libel. Y'all really only care about Jews as a cudgel when you can fling as much shit as someone on social media as possible.

Yeah, originally, I believed the things about this book. I was stupid and immature enough to leave a bad review when I haven't even freaking read it. I read this book in large part because I realized that doing so was extremely immature and very misleading at best. I don't think Mix will ever see this, and there's no way I can take back that bad review, but I can leave a good one and try to set the record straight.

This was a brilliant, beautiful novel about learning to grow past one's abusive parental/authority figures. There were some minor issues with pacing, and I think it could have benefitted from fewer small time skips but even then I would not give this book less than 4.5.
