Deathbird Stories by Harlan Ellison

1.0

I thought the main characters would change from a diety-fearing closed-minded middle-aged man of the 1800s (?) but no, even throughout every terrible character is this more horrific lens. Due to some of the surreality and the fact that the book is older, I thought perhaps that was part of it. A critique of the current system? The writing tells you, no, not really, that's perhaps just the author describing these characters through his worlds-lens.

Somehow I made it through to the story with the pegasus character, included for literally no reason (woe) at which point I lost engagement but returned to try again...Mistake! I think I had heard something good about this online; other reviewers I noticed have said this was a great text for spin-offs (and only that).

I will never know how good the evasive titled Deathbird Stories is within this short story book. I lost complete interest in the author at yet another character being fleshed out by making a laugh out of sex work, immediately followed by him making a joke out of the Black Panthers. Yikes. I downloaded it online, so unfortunately can not burn or destroy it in person.
