Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno

3.0

Loved the prose and beautiful atmospheric setting, the romance was quite sweet, realistic magical element, also contained important messages. Disappointingly though, with the interesting set up, the characters were flat and two dimentional, the plot or the writer couldn't make up her mind where to go, from magical, summer romancy to murder mystery to heavy stuff by the end that made everything felt disconnected. It was zip of nothing and then a rush to the finish line with a wrap up happy ending with was yeah great message and all but unrealistic and contradictory with how it went the previous whole time through the book.
And was it just me or the taxidermy thing with turning my little kitten into a lamp when it died was super creepy (how was that supposed to be cute or okay?), but more than that also was completely contradicting with the whole theme of endangered bird species being killed by humans? I mean make up your mind, whew.
