It's rare when a sequel meets the expectations set by the first novel. But I can say here that A Strange Hymn meets and then passes Rhapsodic in some regards. There was quite a bit more character development and world building as this novel takes place entirely in the other realm. My heart broke for Callie through the first chapters as the book picks up literally right where the first one ends. I am a HUGE fan of this. I can't stand when a book throws me for a loop trying to determine where we left off and picked back up in a totally different direction.

Des and Callies relationship and emotional connection take front and centre of this book. Most of the time the book is about them learning each other as mates. Callie and Des travel his realm where they learn about each other and his lands. It's very romantic and sweet.

However through the entire book there is a sense of urgency and anxiety surrounding the thief of souls. Which comes to a fever pitch at solstice in the Flora Kingdom. From here the book picks up quite a bit and gets even more mysterious and engaging.
