The Christmas Guest
by Peter Swanson
My qualm with this book is that the character, Ashley, is written like a dim-witted 11-year-old rather than a 20-something in college. Her voice is very juvenile and does not match the overall book. I enjoy epistolary-style books, but the diary entries were meh and made me roll my eyes. The second half was much more interesting; having an open-ended conclusion did make me think about the story for a minute.
1⭐️ for the audiobook, because my goodness, did that performance and production fall flat.
Distracting sound effects took away from the story, and the narrator couldn't keep a convincing American accent, instead consistently blurring between British and American accents (the stereotypical Cali-Valley girl high pitch.) Just no. It was confusing at times trying to parse which character she was trying to do since she couldn't maintain the American accent.
