Black Orchid
by Neil Gaiman
Being 2012, among other things it was very interesting reading a comic written/drawn in the early nineties--cassette tapes, music, and hairstyles were distinctive and spot on. The art is really beautiful in a painterly style. After I'd read the story, I found myself wanting to flip through it again just to look at the pictures.
The story was confusing at first both because I didn't know anything about the original Black Orchid and because Orchid herself (at least this incarnation) is just as confused. It was fun and fitting for Batman and his Arkham denizens to be woven in. Sometimes it's hard to establish a recurring character that comes and goes in the story, but Carl was done so well. All of a sudden there is text of a random eighties song being sung, and you know he's lurking somewhere even if he's not "on camera".
Overall, very well done! A mix of the environmental tones from Gotham and the Amazon.
