Pieces of Her
by Karin Slaughter
3.25-3.5 stars
This book took me almost a month to get through and I thought about DNFing it a few times. What kept me going was knowing someone I trust a whole lot loved this book. They don’t have a love of mysteries or thrillers so the fact they loved this particular thriller made me hopeful that my feelings about the characters and what was going on would change. Just when I was certain it wouldn’t the book started picking my interest.
I didn’t like the book until around the 70% mark. Honestly, I didn’t care about the point of view of Andrea aka “the daughter” in this book. There were moments of disbelief for me on how she was still alive and functioning. She couldn’t do anything without her parents giving her a direction. Once the action started picking up and characters grew brains things started clicking a bit more. The unfolding of “the mother” as a character and her history was what held my attention the most. She’s a pretty cool person with a complicated past but seeing how she was when she was younger helped explain why her daughter turned out the way she did. Don’t get me wrong neither character was a favorite but they definitely feed off each other.
One issue I had with my reading experience was listening to the audiobook. This was a better served experience by reading and listening to the audiobook at times. In the beginning, I started by listening to the audiobook and it was hard differentiating between the characters. This was my first time listening to the narrator and I wasn’t super impressed by it. She’s not bad but she didn’t make it easy figuring out when she switched characters, which is why reading a physical copy was necessary for me.
After talking with several friends who read this book, I’ve come to the conclusion that this book is a good one to introduce readers who aren’t big into mysteries or thrillers as they could enjoy the buildup of the characters and surprises. More experienced mystery and thriller lovers may have a more difficult time loving this book but it just depends on if you relate to the characters. I kind of wish I would have started with a different Karin Slaughter book than this one but it wasn’t bad.
