Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

emotional hopeful reflective sad fast-paced

5.0

Yes, a 5 star because I am a sucker for stories surrounding food and emotional proses dedicated to the death of a loved one.

The book has so many descriptions of the various food that you absolutely cannot read this on an empty stomach, even if you do, you'll find yourself ordering food in the middle of the night or making yourself a snack. And the food descriptions are mouth wateringly good.

Now the heartbreaking parts. I already knew, from the blurb, that this would be about her relationship with her mum and also the death of her mother but I honestly did not expect it to hurt so much when I read those chapters. I gave my mum many hugs and even talked to her about this. I told her that she has to stay healthy and go for checkups. And most of all, I treasured her efforts a lot more.

Like Michelle, I've always had a tumultuous relationship with my mother, sort of like progressive meets conservative, we can never agree. But even through the shouting matches and the cold shoulders, we both know that the love for each other will not change. I read this book right when our lives are going to undergo a big change, I'll be moving out and getting married, we won't be seeing each other as much as we do now. This book really made me think and reflect on our lives together, and how important it is to communicate and understand each other.
