Devils Kill Devils by Johnny Compton
4.0
"Within the swarming blackness, Cela listened to her captives beg for forgiveness. She chewed through them meticulously, each of the countless grains of her body being a galaxy of teeth. She acted patiently and purposefully, and so time swelled with the pain of the sufferers, until every moment of their torment became an individual epoch. The era of the lost arm. The period of eaten eyes. The age of the swallowed heart."
Reading Devils Kill Devils is like having to deal with never-ending whiplash. It's constantly flinging itself between breakneck, gore soaked, destructive carnage, and beautifully written but delicately unfurling plot, without the slightest hint of a warning. It's an emotionally heavy story, one with an extremely volatile and potent impact. It's also a fantastically creative, brilliantly imaginative and highly entertaining novel. Jonny Compton's writing is absolutely wonderful, he's managed to put together an ambitious wild-ride of a book. Devils Kill Devils is an epic of a story, grandiose in its scale and elegance. At times, it's an extremely strange experience, giving readers plenty of fresh and interesting angles to sink their teeth into.
Everything in this novel, everything we experience, pales in comparison to the turbulent, emotional rollercoaster that is the ending of the story. Impactful and vicious, Devils Kill Devils is a highly compelling and lush story, that is, however, despite its greatness, not without flaws. This is absolutely the kind of novel that will divide its audience, there's a whole lot to love, and no one can argue the originality of the story, but it also does a lot that might grate on readers. This is a true slow burn of a novel, but, every bit worth the time investment. As a horror story, it's a little chaotic, despite the overall slower pace of the plot, quite a lot actually happens - It is, I suppose, a horror fantasy, though, rather than a out-and-out horror story. What a complete whirlwind, with surprises lurking at every corner.

"The blood on her hand called to be licked clean. Her stomach growled as she thought of it. The dashboard, steering wheel, radio console, and windshield were all either flecked or splashed with blood, but the red on her skin, drying into a thin, grim glove, was most alluring."
This is one of those novels that requires a rather heavy focus in order to make it through, Devils Kill Devils is packed full of gritty details that can easily become lost if you allow yourself even the slightest of distraction. Even now, long after I've finished this novel, the sheer creativity of it boggles my mind. As someone who very rarely reads fantasy, and always seeks horror elements sprinkled in the fantasy they do read, this was a breath of fresh air. A fresh and exciting spin on a vampire story, a fantastical religious horror tale, a blistering, entertaining thrill ride absolutely drenched in gothic gorgeousness, Devils Kill Devils may at times, be a little difficult to follow along with, it is, however, wildly fun, entertaining and highly enjoyable.
"Harrah thought that if she could point a flashlight into the corner, darkness would burn the beam to smoke. If she could hold a candle to it, darkness would eat the flame. This was not a shadow. It was a piece of the night, alive and aware of its eternal war with light. Home to something that would rejoice if the day never came."
