Monster Hunter Legion by Larry Correia

5.0

Hot damn this series is so much fun.

Monster Hunter Legion reunites us with our normal cast of libertarian gun-enthusiast monster hunters, with Owen Zasatava Pitt as our protagonist. This novel opens with the group traveling to Las Vegas for the very first ICMHP (International Conference of Monster Hunting Professionals). Shortly after the conference begins, leaders for all of the monster hunting companies are gathered together by Stricken, the shadowy head of Special Task Force Unicorn, and presented with a challenge: the first group to kill an unknown monster threatening small towns will win 10 million dollars. It seems like easy money at first, but nothing is really as it seems when STFU is involved...

All of the books in the MHI series are a zany urban fantasy ride, filled with gun porn, snappy comebacks, and dead Polish guys. This one shines, however. The pacing is breakneck, and the plot is masterfully woven together. Where Correia really excels, however, is dialogue. I'm glad that I listened to this one as an audiobook during my work commute, alone, because I would have been hard pressed to explain why I kept cracking up uncontrollably. I'm not sure explaining to strangers in coffee shops that "the orcs just stole a chicken" would convince anyone of my sanity.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment.

Side note: Oliver Wyman, the narrator of the audiobooks, is a genius. He brings an incredibly unique cast of characters to life brilliantly, and really adds something to the story with his performance. I would recommend listening to these to anyone.
