A Field Guide to the North American Family by Garth Risk Hallberg

4.0

I loved City on Fire so I was really looking forward to this. The two books are both similar and completely different. Hallberg told two family sagas in two very different formats (one long and sprawling, one short and spare) to similar effect. I adored the format of Field Guide . It told a common story in an uncommon way. It forced you to think through the narrative, leaving gaps for you to fill in on your own and yet the narrative was cohesive, the characters well-developed. Fantastic concept, well-executed.
