The Woman in the Dunes
by Kōbō Abe
The Woman in the Dunes is Kobo Abe most well-known book, and considered as masterpiece. This book is about an amateur entomologist who embark in a long journey to find a new species of sand beetle, as he knows that the discovery of new species will earn him a place in illustrated encyclopedias of entomology. What he didn't know is that the remote area surrounds by the dunes, a weird villagers will tricked and trapped him with a lonely widow in a deep pits shored by sand drift wall. While being trapped, he been entrusted to shoveling the persistent and never-ending sands that could buried him and the women alive.
I understand why this book is famous and loved. Kobo Abe's writing is phenomenal. Not only he able to capture the transitions in the main character’s emotions (the desperation, the betrayal of being deceived, helpless, isolation), but he also convey such a clear & splendid visual where we feel the 'horror' and fear toward the sand, especially where the man constantly clearing the sand from every crack and crevice of his body.
