This book is completely masterful.
But PREPARE YOURSELF. It is dark and Kuang does not pull punches when it comes to wartime atrocities. She lulls you into a false sense of security with the jokes, and the character development, and the bringing pigs up mountains and then BAM - everyone's dead and their bodies have been mutilated, woman have been savagely raped, and the MC is possessed by a god and addicted to opium and committing genocide.
The writing itself was brilliant, and the ways in which Kuang writes about characters as full, complete humans who are flawed (and whose flaws cause all kinds of problems) is devastating (in the best way possible). I am both excited and scared to start the next book.
