"Will you stop that? Look, your ancestors survived that era -- survived it with fewer advantages than you have. You are no less than they are"

"In a way I am."

"What way?"

"Strength. Endurance. To survive, my ancestors had to put up with more than I ever could. Much more. You know what I mean."

This book was astounding. I was filled with anxiety and terror as I read. Terrified that what was happening to Dana could happen to me. I mean I know it can't... but do I?! I honestly don't know what I would do if it did happen; probably die of sheer fear. Despite the anxiety I felt while reading, I kept wanting to turn the page and dive deeper into this story. The plot was so intriguing and the characters were complex in their feelings, motivations and actions.

In addition to becoming one of my favorite books, I feel that this book is one I will reread, which I don't do often. It is hard to put into words how much I enjoyed this book but I'll end with a huge recommendation to anyone who wants to read a historical sci-fi and read an amazing book by a Black woman author.
