Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones

3.0

I think the shine is coming off the apple for me on this series. I did like this installment - but not a really like, and not a love - just a like. It all seems to be getting a bit repetitive with no major advancements on the overall story arc. Things are just moving too slow for me.

This installment had the usual mysteries of the day - naked dead man with the raging hard-on in Charley's front seat, Ring-esque creepy abused dead girl by the tram. There was mention of Charley's family troubles, Mr. Wong's "power" , Angel's Mommy issues and Ubie's love life (actually Ubie's love life got fairly top billing). There was more Charley being a fairly ineffectual Grim Reaper - although she did figure out another ability (marker of souls) which was pretty cool. More dropping of mysterious prophecy tidbits - which is all fairly vague - although the new player in town is pretty cool.

Charley and Reyes move forward in their relationship - and this is the part I don't get - Reyes should be double ticking all my boxes. He is the enigmatic, violent yet vulnerable, possessive, oozing dangerousness alpha - son of Satan. Literally. He should corner the market on BAMF-ery...my kind of guy...and yet...ehhh. I just don't feel he's all that well developed of a character. And he and Charley - not feeling the chemistry. Never really have, truth be told - but it isn't ratcheting up a notch either. The sex scenes I have to say - are pretty underwhelming.

I'm sure my growing disillusionment with Charley isn't helping either. Her constant efforts towards irreverent, quirky humor (if that's what they're calling it these days) is finally starting to wear on me. She's not that funny. The story did seem to pick up bit towards the last 20%. At this point, I'm in 6 deep so there's no way out but foreward.
