A Midsummer's Nightmare
by Kody Keplinger
Truth: I really enjoyed this novel and am so glad I finally picked this one up!
This was a great coming-of-age story about Whitley, who is trying to come to terms with her seemingly-imploding life. She has to deal with her father who is marrying someone who seems to be the complete opposite of what he usually dates, her selfish mother who openly bashes her father, her brother who seems to be more immersed in his new life as a father, and her newfound attraction to the boy who is soon-to-be her stepbrother. It's no wonder why Whitley turns to partying, boys, and booze in order to distance herself from all the crap life seems to throw her way.
The thing I loved most about this novel: the realness of the characters. All of the characters seemed so genuine, heartfelt, and just plain real that I couldn't help but connect with them and become invested in their stories. Whitley was strong, a great friend, and ultimately just wanted to be loved. Sylvia was lovely, and Bailey was just a sweetheart. I absolutely adored Nathan and his various contradictions. Where can I find a hot nerd like him? And the whole "star-crossed lovers" feel totally worked to tie in the Shakespeare theme even more. Definitely recommend this one!
