The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells

3.0

I dont really know how I feel about this book. There were certain parts of this I loved. I liked the main character, Una. I found her scrappiness and her adaptability charming, and I loved her motivation to protect the women around her. I thought the rejected mate angst was delicious and I liked the moments where Killian was like "wow i FUCKED UP BAD fr fr"

The problems I have to revolve around Killian and general story construction. It takes A LOT for me to warm up to Alphahole heroes, and while there were moments where I saw the potential for Killian, I felt like he didn't learn enough by the end. And it didn't really help that I felt like the only reason Killian seemed to change was for Una's sake, not because he saw his own wrongdoing. For me, Asshole Heros need to show care not just for their love interest, but for those around them as well, and I didn't really see that in Killian.

As for the story itself, I found myself very confused at times. There were moments when I thought the setting was well established and I was sure who was in the room at any given time. Also, the world-building was kind of odd. It had an issue that was like the opposite of info-dumping. Wells would mention a character or a pack so casually in the story that I felt like I missed the explanation of who they were or their significance in an earlier passage. I felt off-kilter and never fully felt immersed in the world.

Also, I GET that this is a shifter story, but did we have to endure the endless repetition of "males" and "females"? Not only does it perpetuate gender essentialism and sounds icky, it just felt repetitive and clunky.

I see the potential for this story, but it just didn't really live up to all I expectations I wanted out of it.
