When I received Real Easy by Marie Rutkoski in a Goodreads giveaway, I was excited as always by the opportunity to get my hands on a new book. However, I’ll admit that I expected the plot to be - well, predictable. Young, vulnerable women? A predatory man? Yeah, this has been done. But to my surprise, this book felt entirely different. I found its main focus to be on the intertwining hierarchies which we as women create for ourselves: which cop is toughest, which mother is most caring, which stripper can make the most money in one night. Ultimately, Rutkoski forces the reader to ask herself, what does a woman’s position in such hierarchies mean in the world beyond? I highly recommend this intense and unflinching work.
