I adored this book, and I can also see exactly why there are so many mixed reviews. This is an ode to food and to travel as much as it is to love, making it a slower, more drawn out story than I’d guess some people were hoping for. For me, the detail given to the trip itself made this book. The author truly made me felt like was traveling alongside these characters, experiencing all these new places and people.

The way the author wrote about enduring love in this novel actually stopped me in my tracks a few times. I felt the urge to annotate more than once (alas it was a library book) which is very unusual for me. This quote in particular is going to stick with me for a while:

“I’d met him so young and loved him so long that everything I’d ever learned about love had grown into him, until I couldn’t tell where he ended and love began.”

Gorgeous!

And now that I’ve heaped praises upon this book, I’ll admit that I wasn’t going to give it five stars initially. Dare I say there is almost too much yearning? I definitely had a lot of moments where I wanted to scream at the characters to get out of their own way! But now having time to mull the story over, and how often it has crossed my mind, I know it’s crossed into 5 Star category.
