Ash Princess
by Laura Sebastian
This was such an interesting read. Not only in terms of content but also my feelings toward it. I felt from the beginning that the writing distinctly lacked of nuance. Time and again Sebastian would use a clever analogy or point at a slightly complex thought but the moment I could applaud her for it, she would go and ruin it by telling me what she meant. This is perhaps because this was her debut but it felt very simple and not in a good way. The writing made it seem like YA for beginners but the content was a lot more mature and even sophisticated in plotting.
However, by the end I was either able to ignore Sebastian's writing and focus on the plot or she genuinely improved over the book. I am fascinated with where this story will go, especially that of Cressentia who ended up being the most interesting of all. I think she ended the book with enough intrigue that I am interested in the sequel. We'll see but till then, hmm.
