Ex-Heroes by Peter Clines
3.0

I love Peter Clines' Threshold series with 14, The Fold, (adjacently) Paradox Bound, Dead Moon, and Terminus. There's an immaturity to the his female characters' inner monologues that comes across loud and clear that it's written by a boy. Being one of his earlier books, Ex-Heroes was no exception but really it was far worse because I think he learned to reign it in as his writing got better. It took me out of the story multiple times as I thought, who the hell would say or think that? For example (Spoiler), when a female hero is fighting a zombie, she describes the clumsy falling like "in high school when boys would try to cop a feel of my nearly non existent breasts." Those moments aside, the story telling with clearly distinct voices from different points of view was great. The (Spoiler) strictly one sided conversation from the demon/possession hero was perfectly executed to take the reader into a whole new POV unlike any other character. I'd be willing to read another in the series as the Superheroes meet Zombies concept was thoroughly entertaining as the tale went on.
