Fran continues to be my favourite little scientist weirdo. All my comments from the review of Omnibus 1 still apply.
Story notes:
15. Eternal Youth - an old wealthy women hires Fran to make her eternally young and beautiful. It does not goes as she hopes. Serves her right for trying to kill my girl Fran.
16. Adorea - Fran and her assistant/household member Adorea get stuck in a tunnel with a group of anti-modernity activists/wannabe terrorists. Fran “helps” them when they are injured. This one is pretty dark, but Adorea (the organ donar) is quite sweet.
17. The Sea Monster - A giant monster is “attacking” an island, but not is all as it seems. Properly cute one-off story. Veronica is antsy. Fran knows better than all the grown ups.
18. Trivial love - Veronica has a crush (maybe? this one is kinda confusing tbh). It’s sort of a love story between a modified human who featured as a henchman to the villian in chapter 15, first messing with V, and then finding domestic bliss with one of the proffesors other creations, before members of his old team attack. But it’s a bit rushed and hard to be invested in when none of the characters are that fleshed out.
19. Lust - so so porn-y. Fran makes a weird sex monster to entertain boys at a school so they stop harassing the girls. Very problematic gender politics at play. Not the series at its best. Some proper body horror art panels though.
20. The final movie - Fran impersonates (from within her literal skin) a movie star who dies of a bizarre genetic illness to fulfil her wish of her last movie being made. But the perviness of the director causes mass death. Suprisingly poignant at places for what it is, and also seems to be giving some attempt at hollywood criticism, but also not the strongest entry.
21. Attempted suicide - Okay. So, stay with me, but this story about a lonely young man who tries to kill himself then gets stuck in the body of a giant toy mouse then meets a young abused girl and kills and takes the body of her abusive step-father to become a happy found family together is… actually pretty great?
22. Protozoan - is this the gay representation we need? Definitely not. Is it the gay representation we deserve? Also probably not. But it’s the gay representation we have and honestly, dramatically killing yourself to start growing out of your girlfriend’s stomach as a sentient tumour… is this not gay culture?!
22.5 - Memento - a short extra that gives Adorea’s backstory
23. Justice - sort of a superhero parody with Fran unwittingly creating vigilante ‘heroes’. Made funny by her complete and utter obliviousness.
24. Immortality - Fran meets a bibilical man cursed to live forever, whose body in this intepretation has decomposed until it is made primarily of bugs.
25. Girl’s school - Veronica goes to school (with Adorea) and breaks up a sex trafficking ring. Also, she is not good at making friends and it’s actually a little heartbreaking right at the end.
26. Piety - OMFG did Kigitsu write this whole chapter to make a flying spaghetti monster god joke…..
27. Her pet dog - Oh this one is just too sad. We don’t deserve dogs, they are too good. Love a Veronica-has-feelings moment though.
28. A very lucky man - Kuho is back! We love detective Kuho! This is a slightly weird philosophical story about the execution of a mass-murderer who won’t die. Also Kuho.
29. Egg parturition - some straight forward horror when a scientist steals and markets “baby egg” science from Fran. It goes wrong, obviously.
30. People of unusual tastes - starts of as a parody of ‘locked room’ puzzle or self-contained mystery games like Clue, and becomes a fun horror story about a group of people addicted to surgery. .
30.5 Purin (bonus) - they made a film of the pet dog story. Veronica is not amused. I love Veronica more and more each time she appears.
