Sharp Objects
by Gillian Flynn
Reading Sharp Objects felt gross. While I don’t actively enjoy the descriptions of selfharm, or sexual acts, I don’t mind it being in a story. Especially a thriller or darker themes. My problem was mostly with the descriptions used for Amma, who was 13 years old. The amount of times her body was described in a way that a child’s body should not be commented on, was uncomfortable. 98% of what Amma says and does bother me because it feels like it was just done for shock value. Like the scene where Camille and her take psychedelics and they’re wearing off a couple of hours later like they don’t usually last over 6 hours on average.
Parts of the story were compelling to me, the prose while disturbing was also kinda interesting. Just the over-sexualization of Amma ruined it for me
