Wandering Son: Volume Two by Takako Shimura

4.0

I'm so glad I stuck with this series, because Shimura Takako's WANDERING SON improves vastly from the first volume to the second volume. We really get to see the characters develop personally, and the minor characters have been pared down (phew!) so the events in the manga are relevant to the story and it's easier to tell everyone apart. The pacing in this volume is still pretty slow, but it works this time around because we're learning more about the characters and their friendships. The author does a nice job building/using the Anne of Green Gables references made by the characters in the previous volume... Bonus points for intertextuality! Volume 2 is a wonderful example of the slice-of-life manga-- it's sweet, it's funny, it's emotionally brave, and it's heartwarming. I can't wait to read Volume 3!
