This book is the very definition of “Magical”. The introduction brought me back to my childhood, when I read stories by Enid Blyton, Philippa Pearce and CS Lewis. There’s really no other comparison for it.

Bit by bit, the plot advances, interspaced with cryptic fables and recurring symbols that eventually satisfyingly click into place. The climax of the story feels like a metafictional commentary on storytelling itself - but stands its ground as a solid tale.

The world of the Starless Sea reminded me strongly of the Wanderer’s Library - something I expected to see more people point out! Most likely a coincidence but for me, this brought a wave of pleasant nostalgia.
