Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

5.0

4.5 because nothings perfect & King struggles to write dialogue between teenage girls, but WOW!

Honestly, I think I just need to accept that King is one of my favorite authors and that his books will blow me away every time. I put off reading this one for a long time, who wanted to needed a sequel to a classic like the Shining?!? My expectations were low and this book absolutely blew them away.

Years after the ordeal at the Overlook, Dan Torrance is now all grown up and following in his father's footsteps. We start our story just before he attempts to get clean and meets a child whose shine is as strong if not stronger than his was at its prime. Dan's turn to be a mentor is thrust upon him and the struggle that ensues between his new ward and a group that wants her shine for themselves is intense.

A journey through self loathing, living with our choices, confronting trauma, and (to use one of my all time favorite quotes) being the person you needed when you were younger, Dr. Sleep is haunting and beautiful all at once. While I did find it light on the true horror elements, it will still give you some good scares and leave you thinking about it for a long time.

Highly Recommend.
