Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know [魔尊也想知道]
by Cyan Wings, 青色羽翼
DID NOT FINISH
(FYI: I did not finish this. I fought myself to up to chapter 38 and by that point I was actively wishing the characters would all go die in a ditch which is a pretty good indicator that I should just nope the fuck out.)
Apart from the summary and “it’s fun, you should read it” recs, I knew nothing about this book and didn’t have expectations when I started reading. It very soon became clear what was going on…and not in a good way.
The previous two Cyan Wings books I’ve read have been e.danglars translations and sadly, this doesn’t hold up to par. It’s painfully obvious the translator isn’t as skilled as e.danglars because I refuse to believe the difference is only due to some massive style change on the author’s part. The proofreading also leaves a lot to be desired: the text is rife with rookie grammar errors, the capitalization is wildly inconsistent, the titles and familiar terms change within paragraphs, and the translation has links and notes (“check what this was named before”) within the text in brackets.
That said. Hm. Basically this is a story of how the book “Abusive Love Affair: You are the only one I will never change” mysteriously plonks on the Devil Venerable’s lap, he goes into seclusion to memorize it, and emerges to change his and his subordinate’s fates. As he makes these changes, the book also changes. But the dudebro story energy is too big to settle and a bit later another book, “The God of Destruction” because, apparently, the plot changed too much and needed another revision.
My frens, I tried. I tried so hard and didn’t get very far and in the end it didn’t matter because by chapter 38, I was Done. It’s hard to say whether this was simply boring or if it’s because of the terrible translation/editing work. I like reading and I’ve forced myself to read things I actively didn’t like but that was for school or work and not for pleasure. I don’t want to get angry reading. And this was getting me into a place where I just wished everyone to fucking die and be done with it.
So. No. Did not finish and now I'm pissed off.
