The Passage by Justin Cronin
3.0
This book is so hard to rate. If we could give half points, I would give it a 3.5. The first third was AMAZING! What a powerful, compelling, suspenseful storyline. I loved it; I couldn't put it down. Then you get to the second third. I didn't know if I could finish the book. It was an incredibly dull and over-long examination of life after the events of the first third. We were introduced to far too many new characters that it was hard to care about any of them or to be drawn into the their world. There was no vision in the lives these people led - the story telling lacked vision. It took me forever to trudge through it. And to be honest, it wasn't until the last 100-150 pages that the story grabbed me again. That last block of text left me wanting more. This was planned to be the first of a trilogy. Let's hope Cronin starts off strong and remains consistently powerful throughout the next installment...
