Bad news first. I did not care about the stakes of the main conflict. I just did not. I would have been perfectly happy for the lot of the MacGuffins to get lost so the main characters could live on a farm in the middle of nowhere. The romance was blunt and graceless. The plot twists and broader contexts were mainly implied or not discussed at all.

Good news: I did care about the main four characters. John dropped off my list about halfway through, and Quin lost that special spark I so loved at the start of the book, so I ended up clinging mainly to Shinobu and Maud. But those two had fantastic character growth, so that was cool.

Basically, the characters were good, but it was difficult to get through the way their stories were or (mainly) were not told.
