Hopeless by Elsie Silver

4.0

"i don’t even know anymore where he ends and i begin."

he wasn't just her first love; he was her first everything. the first man to truly care for her, to love her, and to show her how valuable she was—a true defiance to everyone who had ever made her life miserable.

this is perhaps the first book where, even though i recognize the elements of trauma bonding, it works so well that i accept it wholeheartedly. it's the only kind of minor insta-love that feels justified and genuine.

i'm so so so glad that they got to the city and got the life they both actually wanted and envisioned. the writing is engaging, gripping, humorous, and an absolute delight to read.

"we could all die tomorrow, bailey. gotta do what makes us happy today."

they are so in love and i was so mad when he went back in for the ring because i had this moment where my heart almost stopped. though, the raw and vulnerable confession that followed made up for it completely. both characters are so beautifully flawed and insecure, yet they love each other in just the right way.

i had a freak out when he said: "call it whatever you want, sugar." because i had the song on repeat the whole time i was reading this book, it was like beau breaking the 4th wall.

that said this book is the answer to 'what if reputation was written from a male perspective?' perfectly.

in the acknowledgements, elsie talks about how the character has a little story from her real life and i cried.
