This Perfect Day
by Ira Levin
Perhaps had I read this 40 years ago, I would have been inclined to give it an extra star. As far as plot goes, this one drags quite a bit. I kept wondering when it was going to end. I was pleased with the minor plot twists -- the reader even doesn't know everything going on in Chip's head, so there were some slight surprises.
What got me, of course, was the use of the oft-abused "rape is love" trope. And while the society represented does a fair job of gender equality, the sex in the book is very much common to other sf of its time.
So maybe if I'd lived and read it when it was published I'd have thought it a good story with interesting Cold War commentary and brushed off the sex as something that just was. Now it's just too sensitive an issue. As it should always have been. Still, as a thought-provoking commentary on its time, it is a valuable read.
