“I am asking you to marry me because I love you,” he said, “because I cannot imagine living my life without you. I want to see your face in the morning, and then at night, and a hundred times in between. I want to grow old with you, I want to laugh with you, and I want to sigh to my friends about how managing you are, all the while secretly knowing I am the luckiest man in town.”
It’s in His Kiss, the seventh book in the Bridgerton series was a fun read. It followed the intertwining lives of Hyacinth Bridgerton, the youngest of the Bridgerton siblings and Gareth St. Clair, the much-adored yet rakish grandson of Lady Danbury (who might just be my favourite character). In comparison to the books before it, this had more of a mystery plot running throughout alongside the romantic relationship. Unfortunately, one aspect of the mystery the jewel hunt never met a resolution and the other Gareth’s paternity had a conclusion, but it wasn’t satisfying.
Hyacinth, who up until this point, had been the irritating youngest sister in all her sibling’s love stories, really came into her own. Adult Hyacinth was bright, sweet, outspoken and refused to dull herself down for others. I adored her strong will and independence, more so when it paralleled the vulnerability she allowed herself to show around those she cared about.
As for Gareth, who was introduced to us as a lovable and charming rake – one that made sure to keep away from any and all eligible young ladies – matched her well. It was through his relationship with his maternal grandmother that we first saw beyond his exterior. He was sarcastic, brooding, loyal and just the man to challenge Hyacinth. That being said, he was controlling at times and had abysmal rationale behind some of his decisions. But once he fell, he fell hard.
The pair were well matched and through their unlikely friendship they became well-fitting partners in mischief who, after some delightfully heavy-handed meddling by Lady Danbury, fell in love without realising it. Although, once Gareth had made up his mind to propose, he moved quickly, and maybe it would have been better if things had been able to play out more.
